While growth hacking has done much to change the way people think about marketing, it has also ended up drifting into dozens of blogs by pseudo-experts in growth hacking who are more interested in promising the moon with a 2-minute “hack” than in promoting the scientific and systematic approach and method.
It’s a bit of a caricature, but that’s generally the reputation this practice has today.
As a result, when it comes to growth hacking training, there’s a plethora of courses to choose from, all of them of varying levels.
A good growth hacking course is a good mix between a growth mindset and fundamental marketing hard skills, but it’s also a course tailored to your needs: individual or group to meet other pros, online or offline, à la carte course or training over several weeks, and so on.
In this article, we’ll take you through the basics: what is growth hacking and how do you learn it?
What are the key skills of a growth hacker?
We also present the 10 best growth hacking training courses in France.

What is growth hacking, and how do you learn it?

Sean Ellis‘ basic idea was that old-fashioned marketing wasn’t very measurable: in Silicon Valley, where there’s a very tech-oriented culture, the “spray & pray” approach wasn’t very convincing for many founders.
The concept of growth hacking is first and foremost to measure the impact of a marketing action on business KPIs.
The real ones.
The bottom line.
You really need to understand that the idea is to position yourself as a founder who doesn’t do or know anything about marketing, but who wants his business to grow.
That’s where it all starts. sean ellis growth hacking But if we’re a bit realistic, we can see that growth hacking, or any other type of hacking, sounds like a cheap phrase, not least because of its most enthusiastic fans.
A quick glance at GrowthHackers.com reveals countless “quick tips” which, however well-intentioned, have led to growth hacking fatigue.
The consequence: according to Sean Ellis (still), “the definition of growth hacking in people’s heads needs to change”.
In an article on Mixpanel, he explains that, at present, people have a very poor perception of growth hacking: they see it as a bit like the cheesy, useless stuff you add to a great product to sell it.
For him, the solution is not limited to a simple “rebranding” of the term growth hacking; what’s needed is a refocusing of the relationship between product and growth, where the product creates market potential and growth realizes that potential.
This means building a genuine culture of experimentation (and being accountable for the results of those experiments) that differs from traditional marketing, even though both seek to stimulate your company’s growth.
Are we in a post-marketing world?
What does it really mean to get an entire company to think like a growth hacker?
The problem is that it’s becoming very complicated to really learn growth hacking because it’s really a question of approach, and mindset.
To such an extent that many agencies offer a hybrid of training and execution.

The key skills of a growth hacker – what you can learn

The growth hacker needs to acquire two types of skills: hard skills in marketing and soft skills, a specific marketing culture.
Because beyond traditional marketing, growth hacking is really about adopting a growth mindset.
Hard skills are often summarized as the T-shaped marketer, with core competencies such as :

  • Understanding data capture methods and tools, from web tracking andCRM enrichment to web scraping.
  • Knowledge of the dynamics on most digital advertising platforms(Google Ads, Facebook / Instagram, Linkedin, Display, etc) and analytical skills.
  • A major product marketing pillar – i.e. knowledge of the product, the customer, and the link between the two (uses, motivations, etc.).
  • Pure” marketing copywriting skills – knowing how to write a cold mailing campaign, a landing page, a blog post, or prepare a webinar is all pretty much the same thing.
Copywriting is very fashionable at the moment, but beware of the windbag salesmen: knowing what to say will always be rather more important than knowing how to say it…
  • The ability to create a test and capture device very quickly, and very efficiently: landing page, form, marketing automation, and the piping between all these elements.

growth hacking t shaped marketer The T-shaped marketer is the marketer who knows how to do everything, and who has a more in-depth knowledge of one or two subjects in particular.
Having a somewhat high-level knowledge of all subjects is a prerequisite for growth hacking (knowing what’s possible, and forging an intuition), but it’s not a sufficient condition.
The growth hacker’s approach is always to test and measure (as we saw above), but it’s important to remember that this is in contrast to the spray & pray campaigns of the pre-Web era.
It’s not just about following the numbers, A/B testing everything when the cost of measurement outweighs the potential benefit of the test, and so on.
Intuition is an integral part of the process.
That’s why it’s so important to have a culture of all marketing subjects to forge this intuition.
