What is the Salesforce AppExchange?
An app store to enhance Salesforce product functionalities
The Salesforce AppExchange is the marketplace that provides access to all the third-party applications available to enhance the functionality of Salesforce products. The AppExchange is to Salesforce what the Apple Store is to Apple.
To date, the AppExchange has more than 4,300 applications in all fields:
- Sales
- Marketing
- IT & Administration
- Customer Service
- Finance
- Analytics
- Productivity
- Trade
- Collaboration
- Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
The aim of the AppExchange is to enable users of Salesforce products to enrich their use of CRM with specific functionalities developed by third-party publishers/developers. The AppExchange extends the functional capabilities of Salesforce solutions.
For example, the DocuSign application allows you to manage the electronic signature of documents…something that Salesforce Sales Cloud doesn’t allow you to do natively. Geopointe enables Salesforce users to visualize data on maps, which Salesforce does not offer natively. Etc. Etc. Each AppExchange application is an add-on that adds one or more functionalities to CRM.
Historically, Salesforce was the first CRM vendor to offer this kind of marketplace. Launched in 2005, the AppExchange has enabled publishers, developers and partners to create applications specifically designed to enhance Salesforce products. Today, the AppExchange represents a juicy market for both Salesforce and application developers. In fact, application subscriptions can cost Salesforce users several thousand or even tens of thousands of euros a month. Read our complete guide to Salesforce costs & pricing.
The AppExchange gives you access to connectors that enable you to integrate your chosen applications quickly and easily. This is one of the strengths of the AppExchange. Installation and set-up can be completed in a very short time.
Something to keep in mind
Most AppExchange applications are designed for specific Salesforce products: Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud. We recommend that you use the filtering options to display only those applications that are compatible with your Salesforce products.

Presence in the AppExchange: a guarantee of reliability and security
The AppExchange is designed to guarantee the reliability, quality and security of third-party applications. Publishers wishing to integrate their applications into the AppExchange must go through a long process of control and verification.
Even before submitting an application, the developer or the company managing the application must become a Salesforce partner by joining the Salesforce Partner Program. This partner status gives access to the development resources and test environments needed to prepare the application.
The developer then builds the application using the tools and best practices recommended by Salesforce. The application must comply with Salesforce development standards, particularly in terms of security and performance. Internal tests must be carried out to ensure that the application works as intended and interacts correctly with the Salesforce platform.
The application then undergoes a security review by Salesforce. The Salesforce team evaluates :
- Code security. Salesforce ensures that there are no vulnerabilities in the application code.
- Data management. The purpose of this test is to ensure that the application handles data securely, in particular the way in which data is stored, processed and transmitted.
- Compliance with Salesforce policies. The application must comply with Salesforce’s privacy and security policies.
The application developer must then provide complete documentation for the application, including an installation and user manual, troubleshooting guides, conditions of use…
Applications that pass the security review are submitted to a final examination, during which documentation, application metadata, pricing information, etc. are evaluated.
Only after this final review is the application approved by Salesforce and allowed to join the AppExchange. After publication, the application developer is responsible for maintaining and updating the application.
My advice
Read customer reviews to evaluate AppExchange applications. Each application has several hundred reviews, giving you a fairly accurate idea of its quality, strengths and possible limitations.
